I've had my anole Draca for about 1 year now. Anyway, I just recently took her to the vet because when I came home from work, I saw that she was bleeding from her genital area, and in her right foot, she held what seemed to be a weird looking blood clot or something. By the time I got off the phone with a vet hospital, the thing she held was goe and the bleeding had stopped. I took her anyway and the doctor told me that maybe it was that she didnt chew her food well enough, and that it scraped her as it "came out". I was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this and what I can do to alleviate it. I also have a second question about stress. Lately, whnever she wakes up, she's extremely angry, bobs her head and extends the dewlap and Ive even notices the post orbital spots on her eyes. She's like this for the morning (Im asuming she sees her reflection in the tank glass and thinks it's another anole) ((I only have one)) It also seems that throughout the day, she stays a yellowish brown. It may be the heat which I adjust every now and then, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can keep her calm and happy in the mornings since she gest severely angry?? Thanks.

[glow=black,1,000]Hey Draca,
Wow, I've never heard of anything like that happening before. Whatever it was, it sounds pretty painful. What are you feeding her? The only thing I would suggest is maybe decreasing the size of your feeder insects so that she can more easily digest them.
I had a very similar problem with my Anole. He would always see his reflection in the mornings when the light came on, and go crazy trying to fight the glass. I tried everything; putting black construction paper on the inside walls, moving plants around the sides, etc. etc., but nothing worked. The only thing I could think of to do to fix the problem was to build a custom cage with 3 wood sides and a screen front. That way, there were no glass sides for him to see his reflection in. Another easier solution would be to buy an "Apogee Reptarium" from Petsmart. The entire cage is made from mesh however, so keeping the humidity at a tropical level could get tiresome.
Anyway, are you sure the Anole is a female? Usually such territorial behavior is limited only to males.
Hopefully all this helped... Let me know how things work out.

Thanks for the advice. Draca seems to be better now, but I'm keeping a close eye on her. As for the morning, this morning instead of turning on her heat lamp as I usually do, I left it off and turned my room light on instead (while I get ready for work), and she actually didnt turn angry. It was almost as if she groggily woke up, and by the time I left, I turned the heat lampm on it she seemed better adjusted for some reason. As for her gender...when I bought her I was told she was female, although sometimes I wonder if I was misinformed. I wish there was a picture of the difference between females and males because I cant tell from an encyclopedia's descriptions. I always just assumed that since she grew up on her own, she became very territorial since she was always the Queen of her domain. A friend of mine had bought an anole too when I got Draca, and they said hers was a male. (Hers since has died since she refused to feed it crickets *rolls eyes)Once we had them in the same tank while we cleaned out one tank, and I saw that her male (Lorn) had tossed Draca off the perch she sat on, so that he could sit there. Draca was very submissive in that encounter. (I was pissed lol) Speaking of which, how much do you think anoles can learn about their caretakers and their environment. Do you think she would be happier if I occasionally switched around her terrain for a different feel or do they like things to remain constant? Just some thoughts. Has your anole ever done anything cute/weird/noticeable??

[glow=black,1,000]Hmmm. Well, the Male or Female? page of the website tells how to distinguish males from females, but as far as pictures go...I don't have any. There is a small illustration at UTL (click here to go straight to the illustration), if that helps.[/glow]
[glow=black,1,000]Generally, I would say to rearrange the enclosure about once every two months. I would think Anoles would get bored in the same surroundings over long periods of time (just like people do).[/glow]
[glow=black,1,000]Besides fighting his own reflection...?....well, let's see. He used to always hang from the screen top by his front legs. I have no idea why he did this ...guess it was a good workout
Hope this helps...
Good Luck!! ;D[/glow]

OK, so last time I worte in, Draca had a little bleeding problem. After some research and a trip to a specialist, I found out that my anole is prolapsing. Thats when the intestines come out through the cloacia (sp?) So far, it seems that when it happens, Draca has the ability to sort of grab the prolapse in her foot and sort of...suck it back in. So far so good the vet sais. It doesn't happen often, but the fact that it happens is not good. I havent gotten x-rays yet, but we are trying to deworm her (just in case she's infected or develops and infection from the bleeding), and Im using an awsome uv lamp my vet said was really good. Hopefully, that will help. if not, Im going back for x-rays to see what the problem could be.
The vet mentioned that it could happen because she strains to defecate. This comes into mind with some posts Ive read about feeding anoles large crickets or such. I now understand how important it is to make sure it's the right size, even if she'll eat something bigger than normal. Even so, my anole is also a picky eater. I read that most people feed their anoles crickets, but Draca has literally tired of them. She almost wont eat them unless she has to. Shes really taken to waxworms now but they're too fatty so Im going to vary her diet. Ill give her 2 crickets an 2 silk worms, a wax worm on the weekend, and even some baby food (if she eats it) then too.

Sorry about the last post, I posted too soon without finishing ;D Other than all that, Draca is doing fine and is very active otherwise. Id like to know if anyone else has had problems like this, and even if you havent, just wanted to make people aware that something like this can happen, and thats its so important to take good care of them. Ive had Draca for 1 year and 1 month. We're hoping to go for 7. ;D

I was just going to say that! One of my anoles is very sick. She (I think) is very skinny and I think close to death. I tried to force feed her but her mouth won't open. All around her eyes is a dark area. I took her out of the cage and put a heat lamp over her, but I don't think she wants heat because she moved. She is barely breathing and I feel so guilty! What should I do? Let her pass away or try more?

Wow, what a night. For two hours I tried to keep her from dying. I force fed her a small waxworm, which she didn't swallow and I ended up taking out of her mouth. I also force fed her some water and honey, some of which she swallowed, but it wasn't enough. I think I tried everything, even giving her lizard CPR by blowing air into her mouth. After the two hours she died. It's sad night for all of the anoles.
